The Call of Light

In these times, many changes are happening in the cosmic environment. The energies rising within the heart of Gaia are touching all forms of life upon her body, including us as Humanity.

From the perspective of our elders here in Santiago Atitlán, these changes are like the great shifting winds upon Lake Atitlán – sometimes gentle, sometimes fierce, but always carrying new life. Much of the turmoil we have seen in these past decades can be understood as the Earth’s inner waters stirring themselves, awakening the deep currents of Remembering.

Some say it is the dawning of a new Time – what the astrologers call the Time of Aquarius. But in our Tz’utujiil Maya way, we see it as a time when the Sacred Fire within the Mountain, the Heart of Sky, and the Heart of Earth awaken together, calling forth the light of renewal within each being. These cosmic movements affect not only the collective consciousness of humanity but also the subtle ecology of Gaia herself. And yes, we see this also in the outer physical world – the changing climate, the waters rising and falling, the forests breathing differently under the weight of human choices.

It is a challenging time. But as our elders say, it is also a time of great opportunity – a time when we can choose to Remember ourselves as living threads within the great weaving of light.

The Mountain Cloud Forest of Light

When I watch the emergence of the early morning Cloud Forest pouring over the volcanic ridges and down into the valley, I see it not just as fog. This Cloud Forest is a great fountain of Light cascading into the world.

This is how I see these changes today. Not only are there outer storms, but there is also an outflow of Light pouring itself into Gaia and into us, supporting this challenging passage. This Light comes as blessing, as remembering, as nourishment for the soil of life.

Receiving the Rain of Light

But there is a truth our grandparents teach us about rain.

When the land has been in drought for too long, the soil becomes hard, packed, closed to receiving. Even when the long-awaited rain comes – pouring down with force and generosity – the earth cannot drink it. The water runs off, flooding the gullies, returning to the lake or river, while the soil remains dry underneath once the sun returns.

This is even more so where the forests have been cut away, where the trees no longer hold the soil with their roots, where the grasses have been burned back and the living veins of the land are left exposed and unprotected. The rain cannot seep in; it only runs away.

So it is with the rainfalls of subtle energy and Light.

Unless there are beings – trees, animals, stones, humans – who can receive this Light and allow it to integrate within their bodies and hearts, it cannot settle into the land. It becomes runoff – sometimes causing even more disruption.

Becoming Partners of Light

Our elders remind us: Gaia is a living being, a great breathing organism of life.

The subtle energies flowing into her are woven by many partners:

The Devas and nature spirits in the forests and waters,

The elemental spirits in the mountains and winds,

The plants and animals who breathe her light each day,

And yes – us as human beings.

As Gaia receives new cosmic energies, she calls for both her subtle and physical colleagues to rise up and help her absorb and integrate these forces. This is the Call of Light in our time.

The Way We Answer the Call

In our village, we know this call is not answered by words alone.

We answer by remembering the Light within our own hearts.

We answer by walking with Courage and Hope, even when fear and pain arise.

We answer by letting the Heart Within Voice 1 – the voice of our doubts, wounds, and shadows – be woven with Voice 2 – the remembering of light, hope, and quiet courage.

And as these two voices are woven together within us, we open into Voice 3 – the Sacred Voice of Inner Light, the way of seeing and living life through Beauty of the quality of Light of the unknown possibilities.

Each time we choose to engage life from this woven Quality of Light, we experience the Beauty of unknown possibilities. We become not just responders to the Call of Light, but living participants in what this Call is requesting of us.

We become the hands and feet of Light walking upon the Earth.

We become the hearts that drink the rain, allowing it to seep into the soil of humanity.

We become the remembering that Light has always been here, waiting for us to awaken as its partners.

This is the Call of Light in these times:

To become the soft ground that receives the rain.

To become the living roots that hold the soil of the world together.

To become the hearts that remember light not as something to seek, but as something to live.
