Introducing Conrad’s Story

“I Carry the Mountain in My Breath”

A Ceremonial Introduction to Living Within Two Lands

from the Earth Remembers Series

I carry the mountain in my breath.

It does not crumble with distance,

nor fade in the shadow of buildings.

It walks with me,

woven into the ribs of my remembering.

There are two skies above me.

One opens above the volcanoes—

the sky that once held my ancestors’ fire.

The other—veined with city light—

still receives the same moon,

the same stars that knew my name

As an elder beneath the medicine tree of Light.

Between these two skies, I walk.

Between these two lands, I listen.

Between these two voices, I remember.

Sometimes, I walk on sacred soil—

maize-sweet, bird-woven,

held by the silence of the lake.

Other times,

I walk through the city’s hum,

where the sacredness must be sought

with slower breath,

and a softer touch.

Yet the light walks with me

in both places.

The medicine tree of Light and the concrete

are not enemies.

They are mirrors.

And I, an older man now,

am the thread that passes through them.

I have heard the call

of the Nawals

who bless the bones of broken systems.

I have felt the blade

of the Nawals

who cut through what no longer serves.

I have leaned into the dream

of the Nawals

who reshape the forms from within.

And I have wept with the song

of the Nawals

who come from the Unknown

to plant a seed no one has seen.

These voices walk both lands.

As do I.

Between volcanoes and streetlight,

between sacred speech and urban silence,

between the fire of tradition

and the birth of what has never been—

I live.

This is my ceremonial path.

This is my prayer made visible.

Wherever my feet touch,

the land remembers.

Wherever my breath moves,

the mountain lives.

I carry the mountain in my breath.

And so can you.
